Colorado Access Announces New Chief Medical Officer
AURORA, Colo. – Colorado Access, a nonprofit health plan, has appointed Dr. William Wright as the company’s newest chief medical officer. Dr. Wright has been with the company since 2019, and brings a wealth of experience delivering high-quality, affordable, and equitable, team-based integrated care.
“In this role, I look forward to looking in and outside of the exam room,” said Dr. Wright. “We actually have two patients to care for. The individual in the exam room or on the phone, and then the community we serve. This ‘patient’ also has vital signs and indicators we need to listen to as well as respond to. Colorado Access exists for ‘both’ of these ‘patients.’ “
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Wright served as the program medical director at Colorado Access and has been a member and now chair of CIVHC (Center for Improving the Value in Health Care), member and current chair of the CPHP (Colorado Physician Health Program), and current chair the Arapahoe, Douglas, and Elbert County Medical Society. He is also a board member of the Colorado Institute of Family Medicine.
“Dr. Wright is a greatly respected, proven leader with extensive experience and knowledge in the Colorado health care community and beyond,” said Annie Lee, president and CEO at Colorado Access. “At Colorado Access, we support not only each of our members at the individual level but also the local community in which we all live. Dr Wright’s philosophy aligns with this and makes him an excellent fit for the role.”
As chief medical officer, Dr. Wright is responsible for providing strategic leadership for the clinical direction of the company, developing and implementing external and internal strategies to achieve the company’s clinical vision, improving health outcomes and clinical performance, and promoting healthy equity.
Before joining Colorado Access, Dr. Wright served as the executive medical director of the largest multispecialty group in the state of Colorado for eight years. During his tenure, the group added more than 300 physicians, totaling nearly 1,100, while adding more than 100 associate team members in areas like business analytics and strategic planning. He has also served as the department chief for family medicine, associate medical director of quality, primary care, networks, and external relations, and as the chief of primary care operations.
Dr. Wright has been a continuously board-certified family medicine physician since 1984 and has been licensed in the state of Colorado since 1982. He holds a medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and a Master of Science in public health degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
